The Moving Support Project

Securing and moving free furniture for formerly unhoused people: an initiative of Mutual Aid Housing Strategies (affiliate of Mutual Aid NYC).

About

The Moving Support Project helps formerly unhoused people secure furniture to make their space into a real home. The Project started as a response to a request from New Alternatives for LGBTQ+ Homeless Youth, and we have been expanding to provide moving support to other individuals as well. The furniture we secure can be anything from couches and beds to wall art. We search for free or cheap furniture online and coordinate with people who are willing to donate their items. Then, on move days, a group of volunteers mobilizes to drive a 14-ft truck around the city, pick up furniture, bring it to the new home and help organize the space.

All donations to the Project go to move-day expenses (e.g. truck rentals, hardware, PPE, etc). We accept furniture donations (we can provide in-kind donation receipts for taxes) and are actively recruiting volunteers to join our team. For more information on how to donate furniture, time, space, or otherwise assist the project, email the Moving Support Team at movingsupport@homeisahumanright.com.

The Moving Support Project is run by a collective of volunteers working within Mutual Aid Housing Strategies, an affiliate of Mutual Aid NYC, with the support of New Alternatives andthe Open Collective Foundation. Mutual Aid Housing Strategies is an interdependent collective of volunteers developing sustainable mutual aid models that address the crisis of unequal access to housing in New York City. We work in partnership with, and follow the leadership of community-led organizations that are spearheading the movement for equitable housing in NYC. We envision practices, models, and plans that enable us to collaborate as neighbors and community members to redistribute resources and help individuals and families secure housing. Our current projects include: partnering with apartment seekers to confront racial and income discrimination in housing searches; sourcing and moving furniture to support people who finally do get housing; and using media to amplify the wisdom and vision of those who have first-hand experience with housing instability, as well as insights about how to end this crisis. As our community expands, so does our potential to build a bigger and more impactful network of support. If you would like to get involved, please contact housing@mutualaid.nyc.
