This two day online workshop will take place on zoom.com, the link will be distributed to everyone that signed up for a ticket. Does the thought of speaking at a Symfony event intrigue you? The focus of this hands-on workshop will be to generate topics to give a talk on, boost your speaking confidence, and allow you to practice speaking in a safe space. At the end of the workshop you will have a few ideas for talks, an outline on one topic, a title, a pitch/proposal, and a chance to practice speaking in a small group. # Day 1 March 24th 10:00 PST / 19:00 CET ## Agenda * Why speak at Symfony events? Why do we need more underrepresented people speaking at them? * Workshop formats * Dispelling some myths about speakers/speaking * Coming up with topics and choosing one * Refining and choosing a talk format * Writing a pitch/proposal ## Objectives * Create a safe space to talk about our experiences as minorities * Have an understanding of why we need more diversity in our public speakers * Identify many of the fears that have stopped you from public speaking * Identify why you might like to do public speaking * Understand commonly held beliefs about public speaking that are myths (aka overcome Impostor Syndrome) * Come up with several ideas for topics you could speak about * Understand the different types of talk formats * Have a better understanding of what makes a successful pitch * Begin to work on your pitch * Practice speaking in front of the group * Help you feel more interested in speaking at Symfony events ## Takeaways * Topic * Talk format * First draft of pitch/proposal ## Materials * Workbooks * Slides (available upon request) * Any part of the workshop script is available upon request # Day 2 on March 31st 10:00 PST / 19:00 CET ## Agenda * Coming up with a great title * Writing your bio * Writing the outline * Tips to being a better speaker * What makes great slides * Practice giving a short talk Objectives * Create a safe space to talk about our experiences as minorities * Come up with a good title * Start creating your bio * Recognize the basics of a good outline * Start creating your own outline * Understand how to handle questions from the audience during the talk and the Q&A section after * Have techniques to practise speaking * Have techniques to handle impostor syndrome and nerves * Recognize common pitfalls to avoid when creating a slide presentation * Understand the principles of good slides design * Practice public speaking in front of a small group to help build confidence ## Takeaways * Title * First draft of bio * First draft of outline ## Materials * Workbooks * Slides (available upon request) * Any part of the workshop script is available upon request
